It is 1973. Yugoslavia has just won the European Basketball Championship, Federico Fellini has released Amarcord, Pink Floyd have released The Dark Side of the Moon, and Tomaž Pengov has recorded his unforgettable album in a bathroom. Josipa Lisac is singing The Diary of a Love, the American Psychiatric Association has removed homosexuality from its Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, the United States has ended its involvement in the Vietnam War, the first mobile phone call has been made in New York, and the following day the World Trade Center opens its doors. On 11 September, with the support of the United States, Augusto Pinochet overthrows Chile’s democratically elected government and seizes power. One of the longest total solar eclipses of the second millennium can be seen over equatorial Africa. The cable car to Sveta Gora ceases operation, the Nova Gorica Mushroom Society is founded, and the Nova Gorica Athletics Club celebrates its first ten years. Nova Gorica hosts the Workers’ Sports Games of the Wood Industry of the Socialist Republic of Slovenia. In the family at the centre of the play, the events of 11 September 1973 set in motion a chain of events that will change everything forever. The year 1973 opens the door to intergenerational family stories that stretch across the entire twentieth century and into the present day.
1973 is a transgenerational documentary fiction based on the personal stories of its creators. It is a story from the 1970s, emerging from the apartments of the period and intertwined with numerous local and global events that connect Nova Gorica with cities across the world. The production forms part of the theatrical dodecalogy 1972–1983, a year-long theatre omnibus comprising twelve productions directed by Tomi Janežič and created in Nova Gorica, Ljubljana, Timișoara, Ivano-Frankivsk and Novi Sad under the auspices of the Ustvarjalni Center Krušče. Throughout 2025, it was presented as part of the European Capital of Culture 2025 Nova Gorica–Gorizia programme, with one of the twelve productions staged each month. The dodecalogy traces a network of intertwined lives unfolding across a period marked by travel and migration. More than anything, however, it is an omnibus about theatre itself.

The production also features original compositions by the band Mulčer (Samo Kutin, Andrej Fon and Szymon Gasiorek), as well as compositions co-written by Samo Kutin and Enja Grabrijan.
Other musicians collaborating with Samo Kutin on the music for the dodecalogy 1972–1983 include Jure Boršič, Kaja Draksler, Jošt Drašler, Vid Drašler, Andrej Fon, Szymon Gasiorek, Iztok Koren, Ana Kravanja, Dejan Lapanja, Eduardo Raon and Tea Vidmar.
The production also features music from Tomaž Pengov’s album Odpotovanja, as well as other music from 1973.
The performance is in Slovenian, Italian and English with Croatian surtitles.
