ORPHEUS AND EURYDICE

Opera Orpheus and Eurydice was composed by Christoph Willibald Gluck after the libretto of Ranieri de Calzabigi and it belongs to the genre of azione teatrale. The work had its world premiere at the Viennese Burgtheater in October 1762 and it was Gluck's reform opera. Based on the Greek myth about Orpheus and Eurydice that talks about love and loss, but also about how much is someone willing to sacrifice for his/her love. Defying the laws of life and death, Orpheus proves how love and emotions must be trusted even when it seems impossible. The opera remained his most popular work that had a great impact on the generations of composers that followed. The Zagreb production from 2021 is a contemporised insight of an old theme and the premiere in the pandemic period was conducted by Aleksandar Kalajdžić and directed by Anica Tomić. The audience accepted the production very well and some of the interpreters were granted professional awards.
