Gian Carlo Menotti
THE MEDIUM
The Medium is a short tragic opera composed and written by the Italian American composer Gian Carlo Menotti, one of the most often performed opera composers of the 20th c. The work was commissioned by the University of Columbia where it had its world premiere in 1946 and the following year it was performed 211 times on Broadway. This music tragedy in two acts with the theme of spiritualism speaks of a fake clairvoyant whose sudden encounter with the unknown leads to chaos and murder, and everything is evoked by powerful music written for an orchestra of 14 musicians. The premiere production from the end of 2021 in the Zagreb Opera with Josip Šego as conductor and Caterina Panti Liberovici as director was rerun in the Small Hall of the Concert Hall Vatroslav Lisinski.
