CLASSICS ON SUNDAYS
CYCLE OF CHAMBER CONCERTS
Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb and the Zagreb Philharmonic
The Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, in collaboration with the Zagreb Philharmonic, continues this season with the chamber concert cycle Classics on Sundays. The first concert in the cycle, For Dora, is dedicated to Dora Pejačević, one of the most important Croatian composers, and will take place on October 10, 2025, at 11 a.m. in the foyer of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb.
Dora Pejačević (1885–1923), daughter of Ban Teodor Pejačević, spent her childhood in Našice, where she received her first music lessons. She continued her studies of violin, theory, and instrumentation in Zagreb, and later perfected her skills in Dresden and Munich. Already as a young girl she composed miniatures for piano and violin, and over the course of her life created an oeuvre of 57 works – ranging from intimate songs and piano pieces to chamber and orchestral compositions. Her Symphony in F-sharp minor (1916–1918) is considered the first modern Croatian symphony, while her Piano Concerto in G minor, Op. 33 (1913) is the first of its kind in Croatian music. In her creative work she built her own musical expression on the foundations of the Romantic tradition, occasionally enriched with touches of Impressionist color and more modern harmonic approaches. She was also acquainted with the European intellectual and artistic circles (including R. M. Rilke and K. Kraus), and through her refined style and artistic power she left a distinctive mark on the beginnings of Croatian musical modernism.
