Pietro Mascagni
CAVALLERIA RUSTICANA
It is an opera simultaneously dramatic and emotional, rich in melodical inventions and bold harmonies with which the author skilfully evoked the merriness of a Sicilian village in which love passion boils as vine, and the behaviour of characters is dictated by strict social norms. The powerful music and the dynamic and dramatic plot originating in the fervent Sicilian temperament speak of love and jealousy, infidelity, yearning, hypocrisy and fatal revenge.
The first veristic opera fully acknowledged even by the aged Verdi is fascinating to audiences even 130 years after the world opening night. Moreover, many parts like the famous intermezzo between the ninth and tenth scenes achieved a cult status in popular culture and music from Cavalleria has been abundantly used in movies Raging Bull and Godfather 3. Another fact supports the popularity of this opera – at the time of the composer's death in 1945, this work had been performed 14,000 times. The librettists Giovanni Targioni-Tozzetti and Guido Menasci drew on the novel of the same name written by Giovanni Verga. Pietro Mascagni presented music-stage verism with opera Cavalleria. Although Mascagni composed many more opera works, he failed to surpass his first work.
L'amico Fritz (1891), Iris (1898), Le maschere (1901), Isabeau (1911) only partially in some parts resemble the composer of the brilliant Cavalleria
