La Traviata, one of the most popular operas of all time, was inspired by the play The Lady of the Camellias by the French writer Alexandre Dumas fils. The world premiere of Verdi’s La Traviata took place only thirteen months later, in 1853. Verdi composed the opera with great enthusiasm, yet, to everyone’s surprise, the already world-famous composer faced a fiasco at the Venetian theatre La Fenice. He withdrew the work and, a year later, revived it in another Venetian theatre, this time with more thorough preparations. The audience redeemed the failure of the first night, and La Traviata soon went on to become one of the most beloved and most frequently performed operas in the world. The conductor at the premiere in March 2022 was Srba Dinić, while the renowned Argentinian theatre artist Hugo de Ana directed the production and designed its sets and costumes.
