QUEEN OF SPADES

Queen of Spades or La Dame de Pique is a three-act opera by Pyotr Ilych Tchaikovsky after the Russian libretto of the composer's brother Modest Tchaikovky based on an 1834 novel with the same title written by Alexander Pushkin, but with a dramatically altered plot. The old countess known as the Queen of Spades due to her passion for gambling, with her own life guards the secret of the three cards that promise big winnings but can also bring a total disaster. The poor Hermann is obsessed with the unattainable – happy love with Lisa from the higher class and the revealing of the secret of the cards. To see what he is ready to risk, watch this opera directed by Christian Romanowsky and Dunja Vejzović who sings the title role!

The significance of this project is that the audience in Rijeka and in wider region that traditionally leans more on the Italian opera tradition, will see one more major work of the Russian opera repertoire (after Eugene Onegin in season 2014/2015). The long-term strategy for expanding the audience has already significantly refreshed the repertoire with new (for Rijeka world opening nights) German (R. Strauss: Electra, R. Wagner: Tristan and Isolde), baroque (G. F. Händel: Julius Caesar in Egypt, H. Purcel: Dido and Aeneas) and modern and contemporary opera repertoire (I. Stravinsky: Oedipus Rex, M. Kelemen: Inferno, M. Kosecka: Klothó, C. Unander-Scharin: ReCallas Medea, Z. Juranić: Opera after Kamov). This made the Opera of the CNT Ivan noble Zajc distinguished in relation to other opera houses in the region.
