Madama Butterflyis one of Puccini's most poignant operas. It is a story about the misfortunate Cio-Cio-San, a young Japanese girl nicknamed Butterfly, and B.F. Pinkerton, Lieutenant in the United States Navy. Spurred by her great love for Pinkerton, Cio-Cio-San converts to Christianity. However, as with her other efforts to keep his love, this is not enough—in the end, having been abandoned, she gives up on life. This dramatic and heartbreaking story about the clash of two worlds, in which unconditional love is not enough for happiness and peaceful life, deeply touched the audience and the critics alike. From its Milan world premiere in 1904 to this day, it continues to mesmerize opera lovers.
After more than fifteen years, this immortal work is again part of the Opera repertoire at the Croatian National Theater in Zagreb, staged in co-production with Fondazione Arena di Verona, a prominent organizer of one of the world's most famous summer opera festivals.
