Miroslav Krleža
IN AGONY
After twenty years of absence, Miroslav Krleža's drama In Agony in this two-act version from 1928 is on the stage of the CNT in Zagreb. The famous love triangle baron Lenbach – Laura Lenbach – dr Ivan noble Križovec, depicted as a suspense psychological crime novel puts the relationship between a woman and two men into the centre. The husband, an alcoholic and a downfallen nobleman relentlessly spends Laura's hard-earned money on drinks and cards while she, tired from such a life imagines how she would be happier if her husband would be gone, and she could freely have a real relationship with Križovec. However, Lenbach's suicide drastically changes the relationship between Laura and her lover. The directional approach of Ivica Buljan and the adaptation of the text and dramaturgy brought about a different, new interpretation of Krleža's anthological text, and its value has been confirmed by numerous professional awards granted to the performance, authors and the protagonists.
