The Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb concludes its season with the premiere of the ballet Othello, choreographed and directed by internationally acclaimed choreographer Valentina Turcu. Based on William Shakespeare’s tragedy and set to the music of Gustav Mahler, the production premieres on 26 June 2026. This new ballet interpretation of one of the most celebrated tragedies in world literature explores themes of manipulation, love and the abuse of power.

Following their previous collaborations on original ballet productions, Valentina Turcu once again joins the Zagreb Ballet ensemble for a project that translates a classical literary masterpiece into a contemporary choreographic language, creating a powerful emotional and visual stage experience. She serves as the production’s choreographer, director, dramaturg and creator of its musical concept.

The title role of Othello is performed by Guilherme Gameiro Alves and Pavel Savin, while the role of Iago is danced by Takuya Sumitomo and Yuho Yoshioka. Desdemona is portrayed by Iva Vitić Gameiro and Natalia Kosovac, while the role of Emilia is performed by Rieka Suzuki Sumitomo and Asuka Maruo.

‘Valentina Turcu is one of the most distinguished European choreographers of our time, an artist whose work is characterised by precision, innovative interpretation and a highly recognisable artistic signature. Her productions have been acclaimed worldwide, which is why it is only fitting that we conclude a season marked by international achievements with her Othello,’ said Dr Iva Hraste Sočo, General Manager of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb.

Like the Drama, Opera and Ballet premieres presented by the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb this season, this production has generated exceptional public interest. All six performances of Othello sold out weeks in advance, while additional performances are scheduled for October 2026.
