World opening night of Wooden Birds by Lidija Deduš, a coproduction of the CNT in Zagreb and the CNT in VaraždinDrama — 02. March 2025.
The world opening night of Wooden Birds, the first drama script written by the multi-award-winning writer Lidija Deduš, a coproduction of the CNT in Zagreb and the CNT in Varaždin was held on the large stage of the CNT in Varaždin on Saturday, March 1, 2025.
It is a powerful and shocking drama told through the story of growing up of the young protagonist Nada who lives in a rural setting in the 1980s and speaks about alcoholism, patriarchate, social limitations, placing in the centre the issue of femicide – a subject that despite the flow of time and contemporary technological changes, continues to remain the pressing issue. The drama, structured almost as a crime novel, leads the spectators through five intensive days in the lives of its characters, revealing layered human relations filled with secrets, violence but also a yearning for love and freedom.
It is directed by Ivan Plazibat with Zdravka Ivandija as set designer, Petra Pavičić costume designer, lighting designer Vesna Kolarec, composer Hrvoje Nikšić and language counsellor Ines Carović.
The performance ensemble includes Mirta Zečević, Filip Vidović, Klara Fiolić, Karlo Mrkša, Barbara Rocco, Ljubomir Kerekeš, Helena Minić Matanić, Marinko Leš, Sunčana Zelenika Konjević, Hana Hegedušić, Elizabeta Brodić, Beti Lučić, Pavle Matuško, Darko Plovanić and Lovro Rimac.
After the world opening night in Varaždin, the Zagreb audience will be able to see this coproduction on June 29, 2025, on the stage of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. The project is a part of the K-HNK – Consortium of Croatian National Theatres.
