Theatre Breakfast Held Ahead of the Premiere of Oscar Wilde’s ‘An Ideal Husband’ Directed by Aleksandar PopovskiDrama — 02. June 2026.
A Theatre Breakfast was held this morning in the foyer of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb ahead of the premiere of Oscar Wilde’s An Ideal Husband, directed by Aleksandar Popovski and translated into Croatian by Goran Čolakhodžić.
Participants reflected on the historical and social context of Wilde’s text, its relevance in contemporary society, and the directorial and dramaturgical approaches behind the new production at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb.
First performed in London in 1895, An Ideal Husband is one of Oscar Wilde’s best-known works. Director Aleksandar Popovski, translator Goran Čolakhodžić, dramaturge Dino Pešut, and actresses Ana Begić Tahiri and Daria Lorenci Flatz spoke about the translation, directorial vision, dramaturgical adaptation and the creative process behind the production. The discussion was edited and moderated by Željka Turčinović.
‘Working with this ensemble is a dream come true for any director. To have such exceptional artists gathered in one place, each bringing their own talent, expression and temperament, creating a shared space of play – if not magic – and to perform Wilde before a full auditorium can only be achieved by true masters of their craft,’ said director Aleksandar Popovski.
Dramaturge Dino Pešut emphasised that the work on the production had been a process built on trust and creative freedom.
‘I quickly found common ground with director Aleksandar Popovski, who gave me complete freedom to adapt the text of what is perhaps my most important author. Building on Goran Čolakhodžić’s translation, I was able to immerse myself in the text, rewrite and reframe it, bringing it closer to our audience and creating a space for Wilde’s genius on our stage and in our time. Then, throughout the rehearsal process, every line – Wilde’s and those slightly expanded in adaptation – was made richer and more vibrant by the actors. That is a great privilege.’
Theatre Breakfast once again highlighted the importance of dialogue between audiences and theatre artists, opening a space for a deeper understanding of the production ahead of its premiere.
The premiere of An Ideal Husband will take place at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb on 5 June 2026.
