Opening night of the author project Crime and Punishment by Jernej LorenciDrama — 21. March 2025.
Crime and Punishment, after the novel written by Fyodor M. Dostoevsky, is the new author project of the Slovenian stage director Jernej Lorenci whose opening night is scheduled for March 21, 2025, at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. The performance is open to co-authorship of the artistic team and the ensemble of the Drama of the CNT in Zagreb. Lorenci with this project continues to read, in his recognisable style, classical works of world literature.
The acting ensemble is a collective body that jointly deliberates on and creates between the narrative and the performative segment, between the character and the narrator, simultaneously delaminating the novel and the inner world of the leading hero. Mutual creation of the performance score is one of the fundamental principles of theatre creation of Jernej Lorenci, said the dramaturge of the performance Dino Pešut.
The cast includes the following Drama members: Alma Prica, Ksenija Marinković, Iva Jerković Oreški, Milan Pleština, Igor Kovač, Luka Dragić and students of the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb Tea Ljubešić and Ivan Grlić, who will have their theatre debut with this performance. Although there is no classical allocation of roles, the collective ensemble body distinguishes character outlines that create circles, create pressure and depict the world that encircles the two young protagonists, two bodies that suffer and experience an inconceivable and often unbearable world of love and suffering of Fyodor M. Dostoevsky.
Crime and Punishment is a crime novel where crime and the perpetrator are known from the very beginning. The punishment, from the very title is already embedded in each and every one of us, punishment much worse than imprisonment and punishment faster than law – guilt. Crime and Punishment is a meditation about the guilt that overflows Raskolnikovꞌs body and the subconscious, about the tireless work of guilt that is surpassed by rationalisation or the feeling of intellectual supremacy, about the guilt that infiltrates dreams, which suffocates, sticks in the throat, which ignites fever and causes deliriums.
