New Year's drama premiere Adventurer at the Door by Milan BegovićFrom the theatre — 27. December 2023.
One of the most significant texts of the Croatian Modern, Milan Begović's drama script Adventurer at the Door, will premiere on December 28, 2023, at the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb.
Although in this text written almost one hundred years ago, Begović somewhat mocked sentimental fantasies of a young girl and thus the general sentiment of the quasi-romantic period, in the context of our time characterised with the imperative of happiness, beauty, youth, the spectators together with the ensemble and creatives in the direction of Helena Petković will discover new elements and dramaturgical lines.
Helena Petković, stage director and lecturer at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb where she graduated theatre directing and radio in 2011 shared her thoughts: Fake images of fake happy people in artificially happy interiors and exteriors haunt us, and our reality slips through Instagram filters and the lives we live must be staged better, even to outperform the new Broadway spectacles. Everything we experience becomes less real, untouchable and turns into a movie and we become poor extras in our own existence. She emphasised that she primarily perceives Begović's tragicomedy as a text about the yearning for life, love, emotion and fulfilment of the existential void.
After a series of large and successful creations on the stage of the CNT in Zagreb, in the Adventurer at the Door Jadranka Đokić will portray one more canonical character of Croatian literature, girl Agnez who is in constant search for ideal love. Her husband is actor Silvio Vovk, the Unknown is Daria Lorenci Flatz and the Gentleman with a colourful waistcoat is Goran Grgić. Actors in other roles are Ivana Boban, Ana Begić Tahiri, Siniša Popović, Tesa Litvan, Marin Stević, Filip Vidović, Dušan Bućan and Ivan Colarić.
Begović's playing with metatheatrical elements is very interesting because the theatre becomes a place in which it is possible to experience a life in its full capacity, and the theatrical illusion becomes the only truth and the only reality, at least for a moment, concludes Helena Petković.
The performance is scheduled for January 10, 11, 13 and 17, 2024.
