Monumental production of Aida rewarded with powerful ovationsOpera — 28. February 2026.
On 27 February, the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb held the premiere of a new, lavish production of Verdi’s Aida, an evening that will long be remembered. This monumental work of the operatic repertoire came to life in an impressive European co-production with Teatro Massimo in Palermo and the Csokonai National Theatre in Debrecen, with the Zagreb performance inaugurating this international series.
The premiere audience rewarded the ensemble with prolonged applause and enthusiastic ovations, confirming it as a major artistic success.
This exceptionally demanding and representative production brought together the finest Croatian operatic forces – soloists, the Chorus and Orchestra of the Opera, and the Ballet of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb – alongside internationally acclaimed guest artists. The combination of a strong in-house ensemble and global experience gave the performance a distinctive artistic weight and international character. This monumental opera, which unites intimate human drama with grand stage spectacle, is directed by the Argentinian director Mario Pontiggia, recognised for his classical and thoughtful approach, while the musical direction is led by the Chief Conductor of the Opera of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, Pier Giorgio Morandi. Their collaboration with the Zagreb ensemble highlighted the company’s high performance standards and artistic maturity.
Set in the mythical world of ancient Egypt, Aida remains one of Verdi’s most impressive works, combining magnificent choral scenes with a deeply intimate story of love, duty and sacrifice. The Zagreb premiere revealed the full power of this timeless title in a performance that left the audience breathless. Exceptional audience interest has been evident for weeks, as all performances have sold out well ahead of the premiere, clearly demonstrating how strongly Croatian audiences recognise and value the great works of the operatic repertoire.
