The Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb is announcing the premiere of two ballets created by one of the most influential choreographers of the 20th century– Roland Petit. This is a historical moment for the Ballet because this is the first time that one of the larger works of the famous French choreographer is stage on at our theatre. The premiere of L’Arlésienne and Carmen will be held on June 27, 2025.

These two masterpieces created to the music of Georges Bizet represent the peak of choreographic art of the 20th century. Ballet L’Arlésienne is a one-act ballet from 1974, based on the novel and drama of Alphonse Daudet, while Carmen that premiered in 1949 in London, today is a classic of world ballet stages with more than 5,000 performances. L’Arlésienne is a story about Frédéri, a young man from Provance who becomes obsessed by the mysterious woman from Arles, that leads to tragedy and personal breakdown. Ballet Carmen, based on the novel carrying the same title written by Prosper Mérimé and the famous opera composed by Georges Bizet presents a powerful story about passion, love and destiny of charismatic characters gypsy woman Carmen, soldier Don Jose and toreador Escamillo.

In this production the Zagreb audience has an opportunity to experience Carmen in the original choreography by Roland Petit, after an excerpt from the ballet was presented at last year's gala concert.

The peak of the ballet season, the two timeless works of Roland Petit, the audience can see on the CNT stage on June 28 and 30, and July 1, 2 and 3, 2025.
