Commemorating the Anniversary of the Rocket Attack on Zagreb

Commemorating the Anniversary of the Rocket Attack on ZagrebBallet — 03. May 2026.

Today, 3 May, we mark the anniversary of the rocket attack on Zagreb in 1995, remembering with sorrow and respect the attacks on the city centre, in which the buildings of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, the Academy of Dramatic Art, and the Children’s Hospital in Klaićeva Street were struck.

This was the second attack in two consecutive days, on 2 and 3 May, during which seven people lost their lives and more than two hundred civilians were injured. On the second day of the shelling, two people were killed: Luka Skračić, a film directing student at the Academy of Dramatic Art, and Ivan Markulin, a bomb disposal technician, while 54 people sustained injuries.

At the moment of the attack, a regular rehearsal of the international ballet project Donauballett was taking place in the ballet studio of the Croatian National Theatre on Mažuranić Square. Seventeen ballet artists and the guest choreographer Krzysztof Pastor were injured: Almira Osmanović, Božica Lisak, Mateja Pučko Petković, Mirna Sporiš, Edina Pličanić, Barbara Novković Novak, Lovorka Puk Tomić, Deana Gobac, Valentina Kržić, Mark Boldin, Viorel Dascalu, Andrej Barbanov, Darko Brkljačić, Dubravko Kolšek, Nicolae Vasc, Danut Dascalu and Krzysztof Pastor.

All those injured were treated in Zagreb hospitals and made a full recovery, yet this anniversary remains a lasting reminder of the suffering and devastation that marked that time.

With deep respect, we remember all those who lost their lives in these attacks.
