Pier Giorgio Morandi is a conductor of outstanding international reputation, renowned for his mastery of the Italian operatic repertoire. A regular guest at leading Italian theatres and major opera houses worldwide, he has appeared at Teatro alla Scala in Milan, Opera di Roma, Teatro San Carlo in Naples, Teatro de la Maestranza in Seville, Bilbao Opera, and the major stages of Tokyo, Osaka, Seoul, Vienna State Opera, the Macerata Festival, Arena di Verona, Deutsche Oper Berlin, Royal Albert Hall in London, Seoul Arts Center, the Metropolitan Opera in New York, and the Royal Opera House in Stockholm, where he served as Guest Chief of Music for eight years.
Highly esteemed for his interpretations of both operatic and symphonic repertoire, Morandi has conducted acclaimed productions of Macbeth, Don Carlo, Aida and Lucia di Lammermoor at La Scala; Rigoletto at Opéra Bastille and the Metropolitan Opera; Tosca, La Bohème, Carmen and Lucia di Lammermoor in Hamburg; The Barber of Seville at the Bolshoi Theatre and Teatro Comunale in Bologna; and Rigoletto, La Bohème, Don Carlo and La Fanciulla del West at Oper Frankfurt.
His extensive discography includes recordings for Naxos, Decca and Sony Classical, among them two albums with tenor Vittorio Grigolo and one with tenor Jonas Kaufmann.
In recent seasons, he has appeared at the Budapest Opera, Teatro Regio di Torino, Oper Frankfurt, the Metropolitan Opera, Sydney Opera House, Tokyo Spring Festival, and the Vienna State Opera. He currently serves as Honorary Chief Conductor of the Opera of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, where he has prepared Nabucco and will conduct Madama Butterfly, Tosca and Verdi’s Requiem.
