In memoriam Krunoslav Šarić

In memoriam Krunoslav ŠarićFrom the theatre — 12. June 2023.

KRUNOSLAV ŠARIĆ, principal of the Drama of the CNT in Zagreb passed away on June 12, 2023, in Zagreb.
He was born in 1944 in Derventa. After high school he studied acting at the Academy of Dramatic Art in Zagreb and graduated in 1969 in the class of Kosta Spaić. He was engaged at the Marin Držić theatre in Dubrovnik all until his departure for Zagreb.
In 1983, he became a member of the Drama of the CNT in Zagreb where he remained until his retirement in 2010. After brilliant roles in the Dubrovnik theatre, his first role at the CNT in Zagreb was Vasques in 'Tis Pity She's a Whore by John Ford, directed by Georgij Paro. For this role he was appraised both by the audience and the critique, that after the opening night in 1984 wrote:  How to interpret one of the most devious souls that walked the world and simultaneously be liked in some repulsive way or at least be so distinguished and officious that one cannot be forgotten? This is Kruno Šarić. His Vasques in 'Tis Pity She's a Whore is so devious that he is loathed, but this repulsion is seductive. A little bit of Yago, a little bit of Shylock, and Ford's drama sublimes all the evil because of evil itself, almost for fun. Vasques is a person about whom we know nothing, but he knows everything about everyone. In the interpretation of Kruno Šarić, Vasques runs from any codification. Elusive in his intentions, impenetrable in his actions, Kruno Šarić is a great revelation in this performance, a discovered endless acting energy that will never explode on the stage without an inner reason.

This inner energy and dedication to the profession is one of the main characteristics of the acting talent of Kruno Šarić. He played numerous roles, bigger and smaller in the contemporary Croatian repertoire but also in the classics of world literature.

He acted in numerous movies, TV dramas and serials. Along actors Ivo Gregurević and Mustafa Nadarević, he was one of the most emgaged and respected Croatian television and film actors. Always consistent to himself, with great knowledge and impeccable artistic taste, he chose roles for quality not quantity which did not diminish his artistic achievements. He worked with the best Croatian theatre stage directors such as Kosta Spaić, Vlado Habunek, Georgij Paro, Joško Juvančić, Božidar Violić, Marin Carić, Ivica Boban and many others and he often worked with international directors such as Hore Popescu, Steven Kent and Vito Taufer. It was Vito Taufer who asked him to play a very small, yet significant role of Kamerdiner in Krleža's The Glembays in 2011. Although he was already retired, he did not hesitate for a second, because he knew it was a very important sentence in the play. He commented that: at least I do not have to study the text, I know it already before rehearsals. With this role he had once again proven that he was a real artist, an actor who perceived his job as communication with great writers and directors and with his colleagues. Communication that offered everyone on the stage and those in the auditorium a totally true emotion and joy of acting.

The CNT in Zagreb, Drama and the entire theatre are grateful to Kruno Šarić for his artistic work and the spirit of friendship, dedication and love toward the theatre. Farewell and thank you.
