The Drama of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb is preparing a new premiere – The New Adventures of Don Quixote after the drama text of Tariq Ali. The opening night is February 11, 2016.
Your structure is truly faithful to the great master from Alcala. Scenes, big and small, and the light of candles that enable the reading of inscriptions on the wall; journeys without end; new perils prowl from every corner. Some things have changed, others have remained the same. Echoes of past times never cease. (Tariq Ali: The New Adventures of Don Quixote)
Tariq Ali is a philosopher, author, movie director and historian born in Pakistan. He published around thirty books of which some are: Clash of Fundamentalisms, Shadows of the Pomegranate Tree and The Obama Syndrome. His drama text The New Adventures of Don Quixote questions the identity and the social position of Don Quixote in the 21st century. As Tariq Ali mentions the real enemy of Don Quixote from the 17th century in the novel written by Miguel de Cervantes is dogmatism. Namely, Cervantes’ Jewish parents were converted to Christianity due to the Spanish Inquisition and because of this, as a fight against all dogmas, Tariq Ali wrote this drama text. Tariq Ali deliberates on the importance and equality of all human beings; immigrants, soldiers, poets, madmen and animals. Through the gaze of the leading characters Don Quixote and Sancho Panza we discover the world of the 21st century from their perspective which leads to defamiliarisation that leads us to believe how idealism is subversive, not the least senseless and by no means futile. The performance The New Adventures of Don Quixote refers to Cervantes’ Don Quixote as well as to writers who wrote about Don Quixote. The ensemble is gathered in an unconventional research of the term “donquixotism” and to what it relates today. The performance problematizes questions of individual freedom, imposed world views, behaviour models and established beliefs.
