One of the most beautiful works of the classic ballet literature, The Sleeping Beauty represents in a way the peak of the traditional ballet spectacles of the past and the beginning of a completely new epoch in the ballet art. The result of the idyllic collaboration between the composer Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky and the choreographer and libretto writer Marius Petipa, the complexity of this ballet presents a great challenge for every choreographer and every ensemble and its soloist.

The ballet story of a princess who was cursed by an evil fairy into a hundred-year-long sleep, and awaken from it by the kiss of a beautiful prince, has not lost any of its freshness and worldwide popularity in the last one hundred and twenty years since it was created.

The luxurious staging in the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb, with the choreographer Derek Deane, is partly a reconstruction of the Petipa’s original, and it is imagined as a perfect scenic spectacle adjusted to the peculiarities of the Croatian National Theatre’s Ballet. Parts of the set and the costumes, designed by Roberta Guidi di Bagno (with the additions by Dinka Jeričević and the light by Deni Šesnić) were brought from the Royal Albert Hall, where Derek Deane last staged The Sleeping Beauty, and have enraptured all the generations of the audience in Zagreb.
