On Tuesday, December 19, 2017 the literary Friz Award Ceremony was held at noon in the Foyer of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. The award was granted to Damir Karakaš for his novel Memories of a Forest.
The Fric Award that got its name after the nickname of Miroslav Krleža was launched by the weekly magazine Express with a desire to position it as an award for literary works that in their widest sense reflect contemporaneity. The award was granted for the best book of original fictional prose (not a translation) published between July 1, 2016 and June 31, 2017. The jury of the Fric Award are prominent publicists and scientists and only a few from the professional milieu; Dubravko Lepušić, a doctor of medicine, scriptwriter and stage director Hana Jušić, journalist Boris Rašeta and the chief editor of 24sata Goran Gavranović. The jury was presided by journalist and editor Biljana Romić and had to make a choice from 70 titles published on the official facebook page. The laureated received a prize money in gross value of 75,000 HRK sponsored by Barcaffe.
13 titles entered the final selection: Stajska bolest by Slađana Bukovac, Kak je zgorel presvetli Trombetassicz by Marko Gregur, Knjiga žalbe by Ivica Ivanišević, Emigranti by Rade Jarka, Willimovski by Miljenko Jergović, Sjećanje šume by Damir Karakaš, Bezdan by Josip Mlakić, Ciganin, ali najljepši by Kristian Novak, Kad sam bio hodža by Damir Ovčina, Je suis Jednoruki by Maja Ručević, Calypso by Ognjen Spahić, Lisice by Dubravka Ugrešić and Me’med, crvena bandana i pahuljica by Semezdin Mehmedinović.
