WHAT IF THEY WENT TO MOSCOW | stage director Christiane Jatahy | Cia Vértice de Teatro, Rio de Janeiro, BRASIL | September 10 and 11, 2017 at 8 p.m., CNT in Zagreb

To MoscowTo Moscow! Who does not recall the invitation to leave everything in Chekhov’s Three Sisters. For these young women who are doomed to remain in the countryside the idea of a large city offered hope for a better life. The stage director heard their cry and stirred Chekhov’s secular settings, inserting the utopian what if. What if They went to Moscow?

RAMONA | stage director Rezo Gabriadze | Theatre Gabriadze Tbilisi, GEORGIA | September 12 and 13, 2017 at 8 p.m., Hall of the Music Academy in Zagreb

The fabulous Georgian stage director Rezo Gabriadze with tangible magic develops a memory of the reality of the Soviet Union. The leading heroine is curious and a lively locomotive Ramona that falls in love with the steel machine called Ermon. On their journeys they meet circus artists, acrobats and jugglers who surround this beautiful railway romance.

SISTERS MACALUSO | Stage director Emma Dante | Sud Costa Occidentale, Palermo, ITALY | September 14, 2017 at 8 p.m., CNT in Zagreb

Emma Dante captures the heart and soul with such intense emotions that for a short period we forget the chaos and the haste in which we live. The performance talks about seven sisters who, after a funeral of one of them discard mourning clothes and wear colourful dresses and bathing suits. Almodovar’s melancholic and energetic adventure leaves us breathless.

BLOCKBUSTER | Collectif Mensual | Liege, BELGIUM | September 16, 2017 at 8 p.m. Hall of the Music Academy in Zagreb

Blockbuster combines scenes from the most popular American movies with actors such as Michael Douglas, Sean Penn, Brad Pitt, Tom Cruise and Julia Roberts. Films are reduced to mini sequences that create a new story that resembles a thriller inspired by Piketty’s analysis of global capitalism and its perversions.

A press conference on the 15th World Theatre Festival was held on Wednesday, August 30, 2017, at 11 a.m. in the Foyer of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb. The Festival programme was presented by the founders and artistic directors Dubravka Vrgoč, the general manager of the CNT in Zagreb and Ivica Buljan, the director of the Drama of the CNT in Zagreb.

Dubravka Vrgoč recalled that at the time of the foundation of the World Theatre Festival, the Croatian theatre was in a significantly different situation than it is today. After the 1990s, the Croatian theatre experienced a deep crisis, therefore the establishment of this Festival was an intention to offer the Croatian spectators and professionals an insight into the trends of world theatre stages, the possibility of comparison and positioning of the Croatian theatre in a global context. Throughout the past 14 editions of the Festival more than 50 theatres and almost all significant names of world theatre appeared at the Festival. From this year’s edition we must point out the Brazilian Cia Vertice de Teatro, Rio de Janeiro with their performance What if They Went to Moscow? that we have finally succeeded in bringing to Zagreb after two years and the Georgian theatre Gabriadze who have made a great impression 13 years ago with their performance Battle for Stalingrad.

Ivica Buljan emphasised that he is thrilled to be able to present such high quality performances of this year’s edition of the Festival, that have already toured all important festivals, from Avignon, Paris to Berlin. In their selection they were led by the motto of an innovative approach in a classical framework that returns to a time of some old-fashioned beauty. He then presented all four productions of which two were, for the first time, created by female authors.

The performances will be showcased on the stage of the Croatian National Theatre in Zagreb and the Academy of Music and the tickets can be purchased at the Box Office of the CNT in Zagreb.
